Ruger American was $499 or so, sans scope. I have no idea if these are good prices so I may shop around a bit.The Savage Axis II Compact performs well in the field, and with a little care, it can pack quite a punch. A Savage hog hunter is less than 500 bucks nib, has iron sights, is chambered in 308, and is a much better rifle than the 2 mentioned. Have 2 of them, and they can't be beat for the price imo. Other features include: A 20inch med weight 1/10 twist bbl. Oversize bolt knob.

Unless you are talking Axis XP II which is the same price point as the ruger. Which I don't own one. Out of the box my savages have shot better then the Ruger.
